I've Been to the Mountaintop—Four Ways that Hiking Can Teach You about Life and Business

Over the past several years, I’ve become an avid hiker, and each hike continues to teach me profound lessons about life and business. One unforgettable adventure was the day my sister, a friend, and I unexpectedly climbed a volcano—yes, in San Diego County!

That wasn’t our plan when we set out, but part of the magic of hiking is being open to new experiences. A kind stranger near the base of the volcano encouraged us with simple directions and enthusiasm. Without him, we might have stuck to the mapped-out trail, which would have been lovely—but nothing compared to the empowering and awe-inspiring detour we took.

What we learned from that spontaneous climb mirrors so many truths in life. From the bottom, the path looked too steep to be possible. But as we got closer and began to move, the way revealed itself—step by step. That’s how life and business often work. Action clarifies the path.

We pushed ourselves, overcame our fears, and reached a spectacular view we’d have missed if we’d stayed on the safe trail. That moment reminded me of the power of courage, intuition, and being willing to deviate from “the plan” in favor of divine alignment and growth.

Here are four lessons hiking continues to teach me—ones that translate beautifully into both life and business:

1. Be Present.
Hiking isn’t just about reaching the summit—it’s about appreciating the journey. The same is true in life and business. When we rush to hit milestones based on someone else’s timeline, we miss the signs, beauty, and growth available in the present. Define success on your terms and savor each step.

2. Be Prepared.
Having the right tools—whether hiking poles or business systems—makes a world of difference. Gear offers safety, support, and ease. The same goes for surrounding yourself with the right resources, learning from those ahead of you, and continuously refining your flow.

3. Be Open to Guidance.
People coming down the mountain often offer encouragement, shortcuts, or alternative viewpoints. Their insight, earned through experience, can save you time and energy. In life and business, listen to those who’ve walked the path—they’ve been where you are and can help light the way.

4. Go With Others.
Hiking with friends makes the journey richer. There’s something sacred about shared laughter, quiet moments, and mutual support. We’re not meant to do life or business alone. We are meant to connect with one another, and it helps when you have positive, supportive women on the path with you—humans with whom you can safely feel your feelings and know that they will relate. And that’s exactly why we need spaces like The Prosper Network—to partner with other women entrepreneurs to climb together, uplift one another, and celebrate the view from the top.
