Why Community Will Outperform Content in 2026
By April Adams Pertuis, Founder of LIGHTbeamers and Storytelling & Visibility Expert
For much of last year, I delivered a series of keynote addresses on the topic of Creating Belonging Through Community. The more times I gave this talk, the message anchored more deeply in me.
Community is what built my business. Yes, it was also offers, programs, a content strategy, and strategic visibility – but before I had all of that figured out, I had people. I focused on building a community that allowed me to connect deeper with its members. And for the last ten years inside my business, Community has been the quiet force behind everything that’s worked.
Which is why I believe this so strongly: Community is the new commodity.
Content Is Everywhere. Connection Is Not.
We are moving fast—very fast—into an AI-generated world.
You can already feel it on social media: content that sounds polished but hollow, helpful but impersonal, abundant but oddly forgettable. And let me be clear—I use AI. I love AI as a tool for sparking ideas and accelerating creativity.
But AI cannot replace relationships.
It cannot make someone feel seen. It cannot create space for gathering. It cannot create belonging. And as content becomes easier to produce, it will matter less on its own. What people will crave—heck, what they are already craving—is human connection.
The Difference Between an Audience and a Community
An audience consumes. A community connects.
Your audience may read your emails, follow you on social media, listen to your podcast, or engage with your content—but that relationship is mostly one-directional.
A community is different.
A community is a two-way relationship.
You know who they are, and they know who you are. Inside a Community, conversations are created that allow for deeper connection and shared experiences. In my own Community, this looks like monthly virtual gatherings where we gather to discuss certain topics. In the Prosper Network, it looks like Speed Networking on Zoom, complete with small breakout rooms to give everyone a chance to go deeper with at least 3-4 people each time. The ultimate community builder, however, is In-person events and retreats where people can gather face-to-face.
Why In-Person Is Becoming Non-Negotiable
The internet gave us a gift: global connection. It allowed us to build relationships across cities, states, and countries—something that was never possible before. But we’ve tipped the scale.
We’ve become so digitally dependent that we’ve lost something essential along the way: tangible connection.
People want to hear your voice in the room (and to have theirs heard in exchange) They want to see others and to be seen by others.
That’s why, as I look at my own 2026 plan, I’ve made a clear decision: If an offer doesn’t include an opportunity for people to gather—in some form—it doesn’t stay. In-person experiences are no longer an add-on, they are the imperative for the growth and sustainability of my business. And for my own personal satisfaction. While the digital space has been kind to me these past years, I’m ready to add a little analog back into my business.
It’s a smart business strategy, too. Building a strong community will sustain you when:
Your content doesn’t perform
You need to step back for personal reasons
You don’t want to be “on” all the time
You’re navigating a hard season of life or business
Think of it this way – Content open the doors, but Community keeps them open.
The Invitation for 2026
I’m not suggesting you abandon content creation and digital communication all together. Content in 2026 still matters, but you must create it with a new lens – to serve your Community.
So as you plan for 2026, here’s my invitation to you:
If you have the opportunity to attend a live event—say yes.
If you’ve considered hosting one—take it seriously.
If you’re building a business—build it with people, not just for them.
Because the relationships formed in those rooms will carry you farther than any post, email, or algorithm ever will.
And as the world continues to accelerate, what we will want more than anything is exactly this: Connection → Community → Belonging.
