Building a Business, One Piece at a Time

By Sarah Clark, Non-toxic Living Consultant at Better Health with Sarah

How many of you can relate to this - that building a business feels a lot like putting together a puzzle?

I’m a visual learner, and as I’ve been creating and growing my business, I keep coming back to that image. It’s like dumping out a brand-new puzzle: all you see at first is chaos. Colors, corners, and edges scattered everywhere. It’s hard to imagine how it will ever come together.

Starting a business can feel the same way.

You begin with an idea and a vision for what you want to create, but at first, everything feels uncertain. You’re learning, experimenting, and trying to make sense of how all the pieces fit.

The Big Picture (But You Can’t See It Yet)

When you start a puzzle, you have the picture on the box to guide you - the finished image you’re working toward. In business, that “picture on the box” might be your vision, mission, or purpose. But early on, that picture can be fuzzy. You can’t always see how every piece connects, and that can feel uncomfortable.

That’s okay. You don’t need to see the full picture to begin.

You don’t build a business by seeing the whole picture at once - you build it by connecting one small piece at a time.

And if you’re in the middle of the mess right now, don’t quit - your picture’s still forming.

Start with the Edges

Everyone has their own strategy when working on a puzzle. Personally, I like to start with the edge pieces. They give me structure and something to build around.

In business, that’s your foundation: your values, your audience, your “why.” Once those edges are in place, it’s easier to fill in the middle.

Patience While It Comes Together

Some days, everything clicks. Other days, nothing fits. It’s tempting to force pieces that don’t belong or to second-guess your whole vision. But progress comes from patience - from showing up, trying again, and trusting that eventually, the right pieces will connect.

Over time, what once felt scattered starts to align. Your message gets clearer. The right people show up. The systems start working. And one day, you look up and realize - the picture has been forming all along.

You Don’t Have to Build Alone

So if you’re staring at a pile of pieces, unsure what fits next, take a breath.

Keep going. Keep connecting.

And remember - you don’t have to put the puzzle together alone.

If you’re looking for a place to connect with other like-minded business builders, share your message, and find the pieces that help your vision come together, this is your invitation to join us at The Prosper Network -  a virtual networking community for women entrepreneurs who believe in generosity, reciprocity, and expansion.

Your picture - and your business -  might still be forming, but the right connections can turn scattered pieces into something truly meaningful.
