How Are You Hiding?

By Melissa Camilleri, CoFounder of The Prosper Network

During a recent coaching call, one question stopped everyone in their tracks:

How are you hiding?

“Procrastinating on showing up on social media,” one person said.

“I limit myself by hiding my true knowledge and believing in my own power when I am facilitating,” another added.

“I allow the enormity of my vision to freeze me into inaction,” someone else admitted.

And another confessed, “I let others get feedback when I should really be asking the questions I need answered.”

No matter how accomplished we are, there’s always another level of showing up—more fully, more authentically, more seen.

So, let’s turn the question to you: How are you hiding?

Are you…

  • Avoiding new headshots until you’ve lost weight, bought a new wardrobe, or felt more confident?

  • Tweaking your website endlessly instead of sharing it with the world?

  • Showing up everywhere but making no offers for fear of rejection?

Perfection can be a comfortable disguise, but it’s also a cage. Growth happens outside your comfort zone, and yes—it’s uncomfortable.

Hiding might feel emotionally safe, but it comes with a cost:

  • The cost of reaching for the life you truly want.

  • The cost of withholding your gifts from those who need them.

  • The cost of telling others to dream big while you model staying small.

You are being called to take up more space. Own your expertise. Stand tall in what you know, and share it generously with the world.

Three Ways to Step Out of Hiding

1. Identify the reason behind your resistance

For me, resistance often comes from worrying about “what will others think?”—even though I know most people aren’t paying close attention. I’ve even identified a few specific people whose imagined criticism makes me shrink.

My solution? I block them—temporarily or permanently—from seeing my content when I’m feeling extra vulnerable. It’s freeing.

If you use apps that tell you who unfollows you or notifications for unsubscribes, turn them off. They’re unnecessary distractions that can fuel self-doubt.

2. Reconnect with your why

There will be days you won’t feel like being visible, making offers, or claiming your expertise. That’s when you return to your “why.”

If your why is only about your own financial security, it’s too easy to settle where you are. Your why needs to be bigger—something beyond yourself:

  • Setting an example for your kids.

  • Breaking generational cycles.

  • Serving your community.

  • Changing an industry that lacks representation.

  • Fighting for a cause that matters deeply to you.

When your why outweighs your urge to hide, you’ll keep showing up.

3. Join forces—there’s courage in numbers

We’re more likely to let ourselves down than to let others down. Surround yourself with people who are “in the arena,” as Brené Brown says—taking risks, feeling the fear, and doing it anyway.

Choose accountability partners who are also pushing themselves, not those content with hiding.

That’s the power of a strong community—you’re held, supported, and lovingly called out when you shrink back. No hiding allowed.
